Past Shows
Opening Show: March 28th to May 29th 2009: Randy Laybourne
Our first show at Concepia features the work of Canadian photographer, Randy Laybourne. This stunning series of photographs captured during a journey from California to British Columbia, showcases his exceptional talent as a photographer. Shot with a variety of cameras and films, it documents the small nuances of life that we often walk straight past. From aging roller-coasters to commercial signs, Randy's range of subjects is diverse, but the emotional connection is consistent throughout. It's classic Americana photography, but with a focus on the unusual.
Summer Show: May 30th to August 11th 2009: Danielle Dean Palmer
Danielle Dean Palmer’s work depicts a world between times. She uses a blend of old and new image making techniques to reveal a primal and personal vision of nature in its most elemental form. Her elegant compositions are evocative of specimens collected from a memory of encounter, an experience of something eternal and inextricably of us. They are works of discovery unveiled with a subtle lens.
Joan Benney was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is the last in a family of nine. Many reliable sources point to her trajectory as an artist beginning beside her mother at the sewing machine. Through the ever present box of odds and ends on the sewing table she began a relationship with pattern, texture, composition and surprise. She studied film photography at the Photographic Center Northwest in Seattle. Joan lives on an island off the coast of Washington. She is currently working on a series of portraits about transformation, based in cultural metaphor and set in the neighborhood wilderness of the community in which she lives.
